Add built-in cabinetry, integrated sinks, and structural steel supports, and you have a single piece that can rival a small vehicle in weight. Moving and installing something this heavy isn’t a job for a few strong movers and a furniture dolly; it requires the same principles used in industrial rigging, scaled down for a residential setting.

Why Oversized Islands Need Rigging, Not Just Manpower

A standard countertop might be manageable with four people and careful lifting. But once a single slab crosses the 400–500-pound threshold, the physics change entirely. Uneven weight distribution, narrow doorways, tight hallway turns, and finished flooring that can’t be scratched or cracked all turn a simple move into a technical challenge. Professional riggers approach these installs the way they’d approach moving a piece of factory equipment: they calculate the center of gravity, identify load-bearing points, and plan the entire path before anything is lifted off the truck.

Planning the Load Path

Before any tools are deployed, riggers walk the entire route from the delivery truck to the final resting spot in the kitchen. They measure doorways, stairwells, and turns, and they check floor load ratings, especially for upper-story installations or over finished hardwood and tile. This planning phase also determines which rigging equipment will be needed for each stage of the move, because getting an island out of a truck requires different tools than maneuvering it through a hallway or setting it precisely onto its final base.

Heavy Lifting Equipment Used by Professional Riggers

Professional rigging crews rely on a specialized toolkit engineered for controlled, low-impact lifting and moving:

Machinery skates and dollies are often the first tools deployed. These low-profile, heavy-duty rolling platforms (rated for thousands of pounds) slide under the island’s base, allowing it to be rolled rather than dragged and protecting both the stone and the flooring beneath it.

Nylon slings, polyester round slings, and synthetic flat webbing straps, all rated well above the load’s actual weight, are used to cradle the island during any vertical lift. Unlike chains, these synthetic slings won’t chip or scratch stone edges, and their wide surface area distributes pressure evenly across the slab.

Chain hoists and come-alongs provide the controlled vertical lifting force needed to raise an island over a threshold, position it onto a cabinet base, or lower it gently into its final location. These manual or powered chain hoists allow inch-by-inch precision that a team of hands simply cannot match.

A-frame or gantry rigging systems are sometimes used for particularly large slabs or waterfall-edge islands, where the stone must be lifted and rotated into a near-vertical position to clear a doorway before being lowered flat again on the other side.

Pry bars and roller bars help with fine positioning once the island is near its final spot, allowing small adjustments of an inch or two without re-engaging the larger hoisting equipment.

Suction-cup lifters and vacuum lifting pads are essential for handling polished stone surfaces. These tools allow riggers to secure a grip on smooth granite or quartz without drilling, clamping, or risking a slip.

Below-the-hook lifting equipment, such as lifting clamps, spreader bars, and stone lifting tongs, attaches directly to a hoist or crane hook, providing riggers with a secure, purpose-built connection point for the load. In particular, spreader bars help keep slings at the correct angle during a lift, preventing the edges of a large slab from being squeezed or cracked under uneven pressure.

Protective padding, corner guards, and floor runners round out the toolkit. They do not lift equipment themselves, but they are critical for ensuring the surrounding walls, cabinetry, and flooring survive the process unscathed.

Executing the Lift

Once the path is planned and tools are staged, the move proceeds in deliberate stages. The island is typically strapped and lifted just enough to slide skates underneath, then rolled along the planned path with a spotter guiding at every turn. At tight points (doorways, corners, or steps), the crew switches from rolling to a controlled hoist lift, using the chain hoist or come-along to raise the slab just high enough to clear an obstacle, then set it back down on the skates.

The final placement is often the most delicate part of the job. Riggers use pry bars and roller bars to nudge the island the last few inches into alignment with plumbing rough-ins, electrical outlets, and cabinet bases, checking level at every step before the piece is permanently set in place.
